Those who watch for the morning

My soul waits for the Lord

More than those who watch for the morning. Psalm 130:6

Read Habakkuk 2:1—4

I have known times when, whatever I wait for, waiting is all I can do. I cannot force what I wait for to happen. I can only wait. But when what I wait for is central to my life I do not forget it. I do not put it out of my mind. I do not even try to distract myself, lose myself in other things. When it is central to who I am, I more than wait. I watch! When I watch, I put aside distractions. I summon all about me, and all I must do, to also bend eagerly toward the great event that is coming. I could say that I now live faithfully toward what I can’t wait for! Faithful in that what I do is all fashioned by what is coming, is true to what is coming. I would say that it is what is coming that produces faith in me.

Ah, Lord, let me now pause from my day’s distractions. Let me wait for you. Let me wish for you. Let me watch for you. At your coming let me be ready. Let those I have talked with today, let my family and my friends, let those who do not pray at all be drawn toward you. Let me watch for them and watch out for them. At your coming let me be ready.
