It will only ever get better

The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him,

And he makes his covenant known to them. Psalm 25:14

Read Colossians 1:11—14

Everything that I already have because Jesus has made me his own has this quality about it: it will only ever get better. Much of it I still have to see, though I know it’s true. The inheritance: I will take part in what the Son has from the Father. I will have the run of the property! I will have it with the saints in light. It will be a shared joy with fine colleagues, no longer spoiled or selfish, ready to delight in what is purely delightful. Redemption, the freedom from sin I know now, can only get better because what forgiveness does is to give me back my future. It releases me from being stuck in what I have made of my life, from how I have botched it. In Christ Jesus the Father gives me a bigger, wonderfully free future.

Father, I joyfully give thanks for all these things. You promise them in Jesus Christ. His coming won for me a share in his life with you. I, too, can call you Father. He has brought me into great company with the saints. I pray your blessing on my church tonight. May others know what I am revelling in tonight. Christ has bought my freedom, the forgiveness of sins and the healing of the past. And everything he has bought for me, won for me, and delivered to me is also a promise of the kingdom to come.
