He will exalt over you with singing

When the morning stars sang together

And all the heavenly beings shouted for joy. Job 38:7

Read Zephaniah 3:15—18

I have heard God speak to me. Stern words. Words of comfort. Words of correction. He has said my name. (I mean in the Bible when I read it, in sermons —that sort of speaking.) Often enough I have spoken to God. Words of pleading. Words of humble apology. (I mean in prayer — that sort of speaking.) Yes, and I have had words of adoration. For them I have often had to turn to song. I have had to sing if I have wanted to say How Great Thou Art. Now, this night, I am to prepare for God not just to speak to me, but to sing! To exalt over me with loud singing! I will need to stop speaking. I will need to listen.

Lord, my God, Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, who is to be worshipped and adored in the Holy Spirit, sing your songs of victory. Sing of your triumph over me. Let me hear your joy, the joy in heaven over one repentant sinner.[1] Let me hear the song of the Father who partied at the return of the rebellious prodigal.[2] Let me hear the song you will sing when the heavens and the earth are renewed, just a snatch of it, as I have, at communion, tasted just a tongue-tip of the kingdom banquet to come. Let me hear the Father, Son and Spirit sing of the perpetually renewed love that you have, that you have always had, that permeates all things, that will bring all things to their fulfilment. Please sing over me this night.
