Built to last

Unless the Lord guards the city,

The guard keeps watch in vain. Psalm 127:1

Read 1 Corinthians 3:11—15

I am assured by Jesus that it is the unseen kingdom that is going to last. The things that seem so solid, that I can calculate, bank on and bargain for, are all going to have their day. One day they will be past tense. Particularly the things I become inpatient about — maybe that I couldn’t wait to achieve today. They will all one day be forgotten. It is the things I cannot achieve myself that will have the future. The things I can pray for. The life-transforming works that the Spirit does, and that require of me patience, prayer, availability to others and faithfulness to God. Unseen fruits of the Spirit in people’s lives will not go off. Subtle things. Barely noticeable things will not spoil or whither. I live my life among eternal creatures whose hidden character will survive the ages.

Dear Lord, I think I have found what is worth living for. I believe I have discovered what is worth investing in. I cannot create anything permanent myself. I can pray for you to do it. I can participate with you in it. I pray that I shall. I pray that I may have this great privilege of seeing people rooted and grounded in the true source of their being, life in you that will not spoil because it is grounded in Jesus. He is the resurrection and the life. He is the foundation. I see that those founded in him are set to last. They participate in eternal life.
