The sprinkled blood

Here is the Lamb of God

Who takes away the sin of the world! John 1:29

Read Leviticus 16:15—19

When I declare that Christ became sin for me,[1] I am seeing this ancient ritual — I would have said ‘primitive’ ritual — I am seeing the Day of Atonement brought to completion. It is teaching me central truths about what Jesus did. It all took place separated from Israel. The holy place was forbidden them to enter. Only the specially set-apart one could go there on behalf of all. But the blood stains of their uncleanness were taken in there, and were left behind. It was a mysterious, holy transaction that they were powerless to effect. Only the stain of their sin was left. In the life-blood of the goat a substitution was effected. It was effected apart from them by God. He transacted their freedom. For my freedom I rely utterly on Jesus as sacrificial offering. He substituted himself for me and for all the uncleanness of all humanity.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,

Lord God, Lamb of God,

you take away the sin of the world:

have mercy on me;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father:

receive my prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One,

you alone are the Lord.[2]
