God speaking

For in him every one of God’s promises

Is a ‘yes.’ 2 Corinthians 1:20

Read Deuteronomy 32:45—47; 33:1—4

All the words of God to me, any word of God to me, even one word of God to me, is a rich treasure. It is no trifling matter — what a phrase! It is life! It is God speaking! It is arresting. It is not just my religious opinion about this or that. Not even my highest thought. It is God’s address to me that leaves me not belonging to myself any more, but to God. And not living any more for my own agenda. That has become quite secondary. This word encounters me in a living relationship. As a living relationship! This Word became flesh. This Word in the flesh is Jesus. It is Jesus who arrests me. And I cannot, I may not, keep him to myself. From now on I am to live my life with Jesus, to walk this way with Jesus, for the generation to come.

Father, your Word was with you from the beginning, before creation. In him you spoke the worlds into existence and gave them their whole point. You made me for a meaningful life because you made me to live with you. I am not here by chance or whim. And you have spoken your ‘Yes’ over me in Jesus, the Word made flesh. I thank you for every way you speak into my life: the Bible read aloud at church; or privately as tonight; a preacher, a teacher, a faithful witness who carries your Word without knowing they are doing it in a grace-filled life; the utterly unplanned surprise, not the least religious-looking, when I know it is you speaking to me in the most unlikely event. How I would love the privilege — please! — of finding the right words to speak all this to those among whom I live, especially those younger than I am. I pray for this in Jesus’ name.
