My pension

Every man is a piece of the continent,

A part of the main. John Donne

Read Deuteronomy 24:19—22

It is one of life’s satisfactions, I find, to make my living. If I have been able to find a job, an occupation that provides income, a business, employment in someone’s office or factory, a profession or a farm, even if it has meant work that is hard and not all to my liking, it has still been a rewarding thing to earn a pay packet. And if I have been able to support others around me, those in my family, that has given me a sense of authenticity, really. Most people find pleasure in that kind of responsibility. But that is not the end of it. When I make my living, however it comes to me, even if it comes as a pension, I cannot gather up my pay packet without looking about me. Who else have I made this living for? I am part of a wider community of humanity. The living I make is for others than me alone, and others than my family alone. I do not need to die rich.

Dear Father, my provider, I thank you that I have lived the days of my life within your generosity. Thank you for those who have provided for me, who sheltered me as I grew, who gave me opportunities. For the welfare of my society that also benefits me, the very infrastructure of my life that comes from living in my community. Give to me the perception and the privilege of providing for those beyond myself. Draw me into the wider community of creation. Let me be blessed in turn by the company of the orphan, the widow and the alien.
