Bread for the morrow

Give us this day

Our daily bread. Matthew 6:11

Read Exodus 16:16—23

I’m pretty sure that this account of God’s provision is an abiding lesson as well. Put together with the prayer, ‘Give us today our daily bread,’ put with the space I occupy on a hungry planet, put with my own health’s need not to carry too much weight, I think God is calling me to trust him for very simple needs. I think, since I normally love my food — it is one of life’s sheer delights, good, tasty food (how many cooking shows are there?) and I know Jesus enjoyed a good party, so I’m no John the Baptist — I think to get it all in perspective this practice of prayer helps me. A daily diet of reflective time with God, thanks for his provision and for all his kindnesses, goes a long way toward helping me feel quite full and satisfied without having to be an embarrassing guts.

You are God my provider. I have not lived a day on this planet but at your hand. I thank you for daily bread. I thank you for that sense of satisfaction, of contentment that comes with this time with you, this daily walk, this quiet reflection, this prayer at night. Let me know where my true satisfaction lies. Let me eat and drink deeply of you, and not go looking for what I can never have.
