Good work

And prosper for us the work of our hands —

O prosper the work of our hands! Psalm 90:17

Read 2 Thessalonians 3:6—12

I wonder whether Paul was one of those souls who were raised to a high work ethic or whether there is something in the very nature of the Gospel itself that urges me to do all I can to provide for myself. Let me think about that tonight. Yes, I know that in the teaching of Jesus[1] as well as the law of Israel[2] I am expected to provide for others. So, if I can, I am expected to meet more than my own needs. That’s normal for the Christian. I am called to be a giver. I am to consider the poor, the orphan, the widow and the stranger. And the missionary, I would add. I cannot do that if I am idle. So long as I am fit. So long as I am able. In fact in my very creation God calls me as a human being to be fruitful. As a man or a woman made in God’s image.[3] I am living out that image, so long as I can, when I am a fruitful provider not only for myself but for others, whoever I can.

I thank you, loving Father, for all who have raised me, supported me and provided for me. If I can do this for another, I thank you for that too. Somehow if I can support another I find myself blessed as well. You have made me for this. And when I must accept what others provide for me, I pray that they, too, will know the blessing of God, the honour of participating with you.
