Servant and friend

There is no one who can deliver out from my hand;

I work and who can hinder it? Isaiah 43:13

Read Isaiah 41:8—13

The servant of God is the friend of God. As servant there is more than enough for me to do. There is no end to it. I will never be able to say, ‘I have done all I could do in the Lord’s name.’[1] As friend I know why I do it. I know from the Lord something of the Master’s will and purpose, and it is my great privilege to be part of it. Did not someone say, reflecting on these things, God is easy to please but hard to satisfy? It’s being the friend that makes me want to be the diligent servant.

Dear Master, dear heavenly Friend, it is a privilege, unearned, to have your divine friendship conferred upon me. It is no less a privilege to be chosen to be a servant of the living God. This is not something I could raise myself to. It is rather like waking up and discovering that I am now in my Father’s house. I pray that in the day ahead as I plan all I want to do, I may go forth to the tasks you assign me, that I may do them in your Spirit, and that they bring honour to your name. I thank you for the promise of security, the promise that you will strengthen me and help me, and that your right arm, whom, I know as Jesus Christ, is victorious.
