The mystery of God

What are human beings that you are mindful of them,

Mortals that you care for them? Psalm 8:4

Read John 3:3—8

Two things, at least, I learn about my life with God, my reborn life. One is that it is a mighty mystery, as unseen as the wind. It does not have human explanation or predictability. It does not arise naturally. The other is that it takes the whole triune being of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, to make me a Christian. For the movement of the Spirit awakens me to the surrendered, saving work of the Son[1] who was sent by the Father. This is what the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ determined to do before the foundation of the world.[2] So I sit here and count how lucky I am. I have the life of a baby. I am playfully and joyfully reborn. I can see now why this is such a stupendous mystery. It does not come from my decision or my endeavour. Its origin is way beyond me and my thoughts. It comes from God’s triune being and God’s decision and God’s deep grace.

Prayer
Father of the Son, who is my Father; Son of the Father, who is also Son of Man, Son of David, last Adam,[3] firstborn from the dead; Spirit of the living God, sent to fall upon me, to fill me and to awaken me from sleep and from spiritual death: you have embodied your purpose for the world in Jesus’ life and death and resurrection and ascension. Now you bring me into the story! It’s a wonderful mystery, and the longer I am part of it, the greater the wonder.
